Previous studies of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension attending the hospital have shown that many are iron deficient, but not anaemic. Further investigation has shown that these patients have a worse survival prospect than patients who are not iron deficient. Furthermore, they appear not to be able to absorb iron from the diet very well. Our study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, will evaluate whether a single dose of iron given via a vein helps reduce the workload on the heart and improves exercise capacity and physical wellbeing.
