Name of Study:

A Randomised Controlled Trial Assessing the Impact of a Low Calorie Diet on Weight Loss in Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Treated with Insulin.

What does the study involve?

Healthcare researchers from Imperial College London are looking whether a low calorie diet can trigger weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes, and reduce the need for insulin. Over the course of the year-long study, which will be conducted at the NIHR/Wellcome Trust Imperial Clinical Research Facility, 45 patients will follow a three-month regime of meal replacement products such as soups and shakes, while 45 will follow a standard low calorie diet and take regular exercise.

The trial follows earlier research that suggests a low calorie diet can improve symptoms in patients recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Who are we looking for?

People with:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Have BMI >30 kg/m²
  • Men and women
  • Age 18-70 years
  • Insulin treated
